General Purpose (GP) Rating

The six months General Purpose Rating (GP Rating) approved by the Directorate
General of Shipping (Government of India). GP Rating syllabus includes the
combined study of Deck and Engineering subjects.
After the training, external examinations are conducted by Board of Examination
of Seafarers (BES) under D.G Shipping (Govt of India). In GP rating course
students will be trained in both Deck and Engine.
On successful completion of this course, the candidates will be eligible to join in
Indian/Foreign Shipping companies as a Deck/Engine crew. With further sea
service, they would be promoted as Motorman/Oilman, Fitter, Deck serang, Able-
Bodied Seamen, Bosun. They can also be promoted to officer Level with certain
service and qualification requirements on passing the examinations conducted by
DGS. This course is strictly residential.


a. Pass in 10 th Standard from a government recognized educational board with
Science and Mathematics as subjects. The marks obtained should be 40%
overall and 40% in the English subject alone.
b. Pass in 12 th Standard (any stream) pass from government recognized board
with 40% aggregate. English 40% at 10th / 12th but with subjects English,
Mathematics and Science at 10 th
c. Pass in 2 year ITI Course approved by DVET / NCVT with minimum 40%
aggregate marks in final year of ITI &amp; minimum 40% in English in 10th /
12 th

. Minimum educational qualification requirement is relaxed from “Xth
Standard Passed” to “VIII Standard Passed”, to the candidates who are
natives of Minicoy Island belonging to Scheduled Tribe in the Union
Territory of Lakshadweep.
